Nobody likes typing in WiFi passwords. A WiFi QR code lets guests scan and connect instantly — no asking for the password, no spelling out "xK9#mP2$" letter by letter.
Here's how to create one in about 30 seconds.
How WiFi QR Codes Work
A WiFi QR code encodes three pieces of information:
- Network name (SSID) — Your WiFi network's name
- Password — The network password
- Encryption type — Usually WPA/WPA2 (the standard for modern networks)
When someone scans it with their phone camera, the device automatically offers to join the network. One tap and they're connected.
Important: WiFi QR codes are always static. The WiFi credentials are encoded directly into the QR pattern. This means:
- They work without any internet connection (the phone reads the data locally)
- They work forever (no server dependency)
- If you change your WiFi password, you need to generate a new QR code
Create a WiFi QR Code (3 Steps)
Step 1: Gather Your WiFi Details
You need:
- Network name — The exact name as it appears in your WiFi list (case-sensitive)
- Password — Your WiFi password
- Security type — Almost always WPA/WPA2. If your network is from the last 10 years, it's WPA2. Only select "None" for open networks with no password.
How to find your WiFi password if you forgot it:
- iPhone: Settings → WiFi → tap the (i) next to your network → Password
- Android: Settings → WiFi → tap your network → Share → shows QR code and password
- Mac: Keychain Access → search for your network name
- Windows: Network settings → your network → Properties → Show password
- Router: Check the sticker on the bottom/back of your router
Step 2: Generate the QR Code
- Go to QRMax's WiFi QR Code Generator
- Enter your network name exactly as it appears
- Enter your password
- Select your security type (WPA/WPA2 for most networks)
- Click Generate
Step 3: Print or Display
Download the QR code and put it where guests will see it:
- Home: Frame it near your router or entryway
- Office: Print on a small card for the reception desk
- Café/Restaurant: Add to table tents alongside your menu QR code
- Airbnb/Hotel: Include in your welcome packet or frame on the nightstand
- Events: Display on signage at the venue entrance
Best Placement Ideas
For Your Home
Print the QR code on a small card and put it in a frame. Place it:
- Near the front door
- On the fridge
- In the guest bedroom
- On the coffee table
A simple label saying "Scan to Connect to WiFi" is all you need.
For Your Business
| Location | Format |
|---|---|
| Café/Restaurant | Table tent or wall poster |
| Office reception | Framed card on the desk |
| Co-working space | Wall-mounted sign near desks |
| Hotel room | Tent card on the nightstand |
| Airbnb | Welcome booklet + framed card |
| Retail store | Sign near the entrance |
| Waiting room | Poster on the wall |
For Events
For conferences, weddings, or parties:
- Include on printed programs
- Display on screens during the event
- Add to table centerpiece cards
Tips for a Better WiFi QR Code
Make It Readable
- Use a minimum size of 2" × 2" for wall/desk display
- Keep high contrast (dark code on light background)
- Leave white space around the code
Add Context
Always include text that tells people what the QR code does:
- "Scan to Connect to WiFi"
- "Guest WiFi — Scan to Join"
- "Free WiFi — Scan Here"
Separate Guest and Private Networks
For businesses, create a separate guest WiFi network rather than sharing your primary network credentials. Most modern routers support guest networks. Then create a QR code for just the guest network.
Update When You Change Passwords
Since WiFi QR codes are static, remember to generate and print a new one whenever you change your WiFi password. A good habit: update the QR code the same day you change the password.
Compatibility
WiFi QR codes work on:
- iPhone — iOS 11+ (2017 and later), built into the camera app
- Android — Most Android 10+ devices, built into the camera app
- Older devices — May need a third-party QR scanner app
The feature is built into the default camera app on all modern smartphones. No special app required.
